Squirrels

In this section you will find all the required information about Squirrels. Our Squirrel Drey meets on Saturdays 09:00-10:00. Some weeks we may meet away from our normal venue to facilitate our exciting programme.

About Squirrels

Squirrel Scouts is a place for 4 and 5 year olds to learn new skills and join the scouting fun for the very first time. Squirrels meet in groups called Dreys. Each Drey is part of a Scout group with Beaver Colonies, Cub Packs, and Scout Troops, which means there’s plenty of support and space for each young person to grow.

Squirrels have fun and make friends while developing skills they’ll use for the rest of their lives. We worked with the experts to design an achievable and ambitious programme full of laughter, adventure, and chances to ask ‘why?’ Squirrels get outside and explore. They tell stories and play games. They learn about themselves and others. And they figure things out one question, game, or activity at a time.

As well as enjoying plenty of adventures, being a Squirrel is about exploring who you are and what matters to you. These are big ideas for our smallest Scouts, so we start with a simple Promise. There are eight different versions of the Squirrel Scout Promise so everyone can choose one that means something to them. All the versions focus on things that Scouts agree on, like doing your best and helping others.

Once a new Squirrel’s settled into their Drey, they’ll talk to their parents and carers and choose which version of the Promise is right for them. When a new Squirrel makes their Promise for the first time, their Drey comes together to welcome their new friend in a big
celebration called an Investiture.

Uniform

What Squirrels wear

Squirrels uniform consists of a red sweatshirt with your badges sewn on and a coloured scarf or 'necker’ to represent your local group. There are lots of other optional accessories you can wear such as hats, hoodies, navy blue trousers or shorts, if you’d like to.

Why uniform is important

Wearing a uniform is comfy and practical. It means you can run around and get messy without ruining your other clothes. It makes you feel part of a team. It means no one feels uncomfortable or left out. And it gives you a place to show off all the brilliant badges you earn.

Where you can buy the uniform

Uniform can be bought from the official Scout Shop website Here. If you’re stuck, ask any of our adult volunteers to tell you more about what to buy and where to buy it.

Badges

There are 12 activity badges and 4 challenge badges for the Squirrels to complete. Each activity badge focusses on a different are of discovery, play and trying something new. Whether that is trying out an experiment or celebrating something. Whilst the 4 Challenge badges allow the Squirrels discover more about themselves, their fellow Squirrels, the world and about adventure. Once all 4 challenge badges and one activity badge have been earnt Squirrels will be awarded the highest award possible to the Squirrels, The Chief Scouts Acorn Award.
